An opening into which a plug or other connecting part is designed to fit (e.g. a light bulb socket).

socket: the female half of every electrical connection

A socket is a female receptacle designed to accept a plug, connector, or similar male component. Unlike a plug, which carries the active conductors outward, a socket houses the receiving contacts recessed within its body, protecting them from accidental contact and environmental damage. The socket's internal geometry and contact arrangement must match its corresponding plug exactly, both electrically and mechanically.

Sockets vary dramatically by application and voltage class. A household wall socket in North America has two parallel slots (plus a round grounding pin hole) rated for 120 volts, 15 to 20 amps. Industrial three-phase sockets may have four or five round pins arranged in a specific pattern, rated for 208, 277, or 480 volts. Signal-level sockets like XLR or RCA use much smaller contacts and are unrelated to power distribution. Screw-terminal sockets accept bare wire ends rather than plugs. The IEC 60320 standard defines industrial power sockets; the IEC 60309 standard governs high-current industrial connectors.

Contact materials and wear

Socket contacts are typically made from brass, beryllium copper, or phosphor bronze, often plated with nickel or gold to resist oxidation and ensure low contact resistance. The socket body is usually phenolic, polycarbonate, or ceramic. Repeated insertion and withdrawal causes mechanical wear: contacts gradually lose tension, the resistance across the junction rises, and the connection may overheat. Corrosion occurs faster in damp or corrosive environments. Poor contact quality creates a fire hazard, especially in high-current applications.

The term derives from an Old English word for a hollow or cavity, which remains apt. In everyday speech, people often call any receptacle a socket, but engineers distinguish between power sockets, signal sockets, and mechanical sockets (like a tool socket). The socket sits at the receiving end of the power or signal chain, making it a passive component, yet its design, materials, and condition directly determine connection reliability.
