A cut-out is a switching device that interrupts electrical current automatically when abnormal conditions occur, or that manually redirects current from one circuit path to another. In its simplest form, it is a mechanical switch controlled by an electromagnet or thermal element, designed to open and deenergize a circuit when current exceeds safe limits or when voltage drops below a set threshold. The device sits between the power supply and the load, acting as a protective barrier and a routing mechanism.
Cut-outs come in several functional types. A fuse cut-out combines a fusible link with a switch housing, allowing current to pass until the fuse element melts at its rated amperage, at which point a spring-loaded mechanism opens the contacts and physically separates them for isolation. An electromagnetic cut-out uses a coil to sense overcurrent; when current rises beyond design limits, the magnetic field strengthens enough to trip a latch and spring the contacts open. Thermal cut-outs employ a bimetallic strip that bends when heated by excess current, triggering a mechanical release. Some cut-outs are designed to bypass a primary circuit and energize a secondary one, useful for switching between generator sets or redirecting power in case of equipment failure.
Application and failure modes
Cut-outs are common in rail transport, where they protect circuit branches in substations and on locomotives. They appear in marine electrical systems, industrial control panels, and distribution networks. A properly sized cut-out will trip reliably at its rated current, typically in the range of 15 to several hundred amperes depending on the circuit. Common failure modes include contact erosion from repeated arcing, which reduces the force of the opening action; reluctance to trip due to dirt or corrosion on the moving parts; and failure to re-engage after a momentary overload when the device should have held. Maintenance involves cleaning contact surfaces, checking spring tension, and verifying that the trip threshold remains accurate under load.
The term "cut-out" comes from the device's original action of cutting out (removing) a circuit from service. In older installations, these were fuse-based and required manual inspection and replacement after operation. Modern variants retain the name even when they employ electronic sensing and automatic reset features. The distinction between a cut-out and a circuit breaker is not always sharp; both protect circuits, but cut-outs were historically simpler, cheaper, and less capable of repeated duty, whereas circuit breakers were designed for frequent automatic operation and reset.
