A radiator hose is a reinforced rubber tube, typically 1 to 2 inches in diameter, that circulates coolant from the engine block to the radiator core and back to the water pump inlet. The upper hose carries hot coolant leaving the engine at 180 to 210 degrees Fahrenheit; the lower hose returns cooler fluid to the pump. Both are exposed to high internal pressure (usually 15 to 30 psi in road vehicles, sometimes higher in industrial engines) and must expand and contract thousands of times as the engine cycles through temperature swings.
Radiator hoses are constructed from synthetic rubber compounds (EPDM is common) reinforced with fabric or spiral wire layers. The inner diameter is smooth to minimize turbulence; the outer wall is ribbed or spiraled for crush resistance and easier routing. Crimped or spring-clamp connections at each end seal the hose to metal fittings on the engine block and radiator tanks. Industrial and marine applications often use larger diameters and higher-pressure ratings than light vehicles.
Radiator hoses degrade from heat cycling, UV exposure, and chemical attack by coolant additives. Tiny cracks form in the rubber interior after 5 to 10 years of normal use, gradually releasing coolant into the engine bay or the cooling system. Ballooning or bulging indicates internal liner breakdown; a burst hose under load can drain the entire coolant reservoir in minutes and cause catastrophic engine overheating. Brittle, cracked hoses that leak slowly are the most common failure mode in older equipment.
The distinction between upper and lower hoses matters: upper hoses experience the highest temperatures and pressures and tend to fail first. Lower hoses operate at lower temperature but must resist collapse when the radiator fan creates negative pressure. Industrial applications sometimes use braided stainless steel sleeving over the rubber core for extended life in harsh environments or where hose routing passes near sharp edges or hot surfaces.
Replacement hoses must match the original inside diameter, wall thickness, and pressure rating. Using a hose rated for 15 psi in a system that runs at 25 psi invites premature bulging or rupture. OEM and aftermarket hoses are functionally equivalent; the name simply denotes the component's role as the primary plumbing between the two largest heat-transfer assemblies in a liquid-cooled engine.
