A digital video recorder mounted on the dashboard of a vehicle or elsewhere inside the vehicle to record occurrences in the vicinity, such as traffic accidents that the vehicle has been involved in, to provide evidence for criminal prosecutions, insurance claims, etc.

A dashcam is a fixed or semi-fixed digital video recorder that runs continuously while a vehicle is parked or in motion, capturing forward-facing (or sometimes rear-facing or cabin) footage to the internal storage or a memory card. The unit powers on with the vehicle's ignition or remains live via a hardwired connection to the battery, recording in a loop that overwrites old files once storage fills. Resolution ranges from 1080p in basic models to 4K in premium units, with frame rates typically 30 fps standard or 60 fps for smoother motion capture.

The primary use case is liability documentation in traffic incidents: collision damage, hit-and-run situations, or traffic violations by other parties. Insurance adjusters and law enforcement reference the footage to establish fault and sequence of events. Drivers also use dashcams to dispute traffic tickets or citations, since the timestamp and geolocation metadata embedded in the video file provide objective corroboration. Fleet operators deploy dashcams across commercial vehicles to monitor driver behavior, reduce fraudulent injury claims, and satisfy insurer requirements.

Hardware variants and installation

Single-channel units record only the forward road view. Dual-channel (or multi-channel) systems add a rear-facing or cabin-facing camera, connected to a shared processor and storage. Loop recording divides the storage into segments (typically 1 to 5 minutes each) so that when capacity is reached, the oldest file deletes and recording continues uninterrupted. Most dashcams include a G-sensor (accelerometer) that detects sudden deceleration or impact, immediately protecting the current video segment from being overwritten, preserving evidence of the collision. Wiring runs either through the headliner and door seals to a hardwired connection at the fuse box, or simply plugs into a 12V outlet with the cable routed along trim. Angle of view (field of view) varies from 120 to 180 degrees; wider angles capture more context but introduce barrel distortion.

Common failure points include memory card corruption from power loss during write cycles (solid-state drives in high-end units reduce this risk), lens fogging in humid climates (ventilation holes or sealed optics matter), and adhesive failure of the dash mount under heat cycles. Many units lack sufficient cooling, causing the processor to thermal-throttle or shut down in direct sunlight. Night vision sensitivity and low-light performance differ sharply between sensors and lens designs; cheap units produce grainy, unusable footage after dark, while premium models use larger sensors or supplemental infrared LEDs.

The term dashcam originated from the dashboard mounting location, though units are now also mounted on windshields, rear windows, or cabin ceilings. In some jurisdictions, privacy laws restrict dashcam use, particularly cabin-facing versions that record passengers without consent; regulations vary significantly between countries and states. Footage admissibility in court also depends on local rules of evidence and chain-of-custody procedures, so raw dashcam video alone may not settle a legal dispute.
