A shift of a transmission into a lower gear, as dictated by heavier load on the engine, as for example when climbing a hill or strongly accelerating.

A downshift is the act of moving a transmission into a lower gear ratio. This increases engine revolutions per minute relative to vehicle speed, delivering more torque to the wheels at the cost of higher fuel consumption and engine noise. The shift happens either automatically in a fluid transmission or through deliberate lever movement in manual boxes.
In automatic transmissions, downshifts occur without driver input when the engine approaches its torque peak or when load increases. A vehicle climbing a steep grade may downshift from fourth to third gear as the transmission senses rising throttle pressure or falling road speed. On highway descent, an automatic may downshift to use engine braking and reduce reliance on the service brakes. Modern automatics use engine speed, throttle position, and vehicle speed sensors to judge when a downshift improves efficiency or drivability.
Manual transmission drivers downshift when engine RPM falls too low for the selected gear, causing the engine to labour and struggle to maintain speed. Releasing throttle pressure while depressing the clutch pedal allows a shift to a lower gear. Experienced drivers blip the throttle during downshifts to match engine speed with wheel speed, smoothing the engagement and reducing drivetrain shock. Poor downshift technique causes jolting, tire slippage, or transmission damage.
Wear and failure modes
Excessive downshifting accelerates wear on clutch facings, synchromesh rings, and gear teeth. Downshifting at excessive speed generates sudden load spikes that can crack gears or bend fork rods. Repeated engine braking downshifts in mountainous terrain cause transmission fluid temperature to rise, breaking down viscosity and accelerating internal wear.
The term derives from the direction of the shift lever or the direction of gear reduction: moving down the gear sequence from higher to lower numerical ratios. In racing and performance driving, trail braking and downshifting are linked techniques; the downshift is timed to occur as vehicle deceleration matches the torque delivery of the lower gear, keeping engine and road speed in synchrony.
