datum

A point, line, plane, or surface with reference to which positions (such as elevations) are measured or indicated. (Examples include a permanent benchmark in leveling or mean sea level in a topographical survey).

A datum is a fixed reference point, line, plane, or surface from which all other measurements in a survey are taken. In leveling work, it might be a brass bolt driven into bedrock or a painted mark on a bridge abutment. In topographical surveys, it is often mean sea level (MSL). The datum itself does not move; everything else is measured relative to it. Without a datum, a surveyor's numbers are meaningless because they describe only differences, not actual positions in space.

The most common datum in civil work is a benchmark: a marked point of known elevation, usually established by a government agency and recoverable decades or centuries later. A surveyor will set up a level at an arbitrary height, sight the benchmark, and record that reading. Then all other elevations in the project are measured from the same instrument position. The difference between the benchmark reading and a new point's reading gives the true elevation difference. Benchmarks are often carved into stone, cast into concrete, or marked on existing structures like building cornerstones or highway monuments.

Different surveys use different datums depending on scope and accuracy needs. A small building site might use an arbitrary datum set at ground level nearby; a construction project affecting drainage across a county must tie to the official vertical datum (in the USA, the North American Vertical Datum of 1988, or NAVD88). Horizontal positions use a datum plane too, usually referenced to a state or national coordinate system. Confusion between datums causes expensive errors: a contractor working to the wrong reference will place walls, slopes, or utilities at wrong elevations.

A datum is abstract: it is the system of reference itself. A benchmark is concrete: it is a physical point that embodies the datum. You establish a datum by adopting a reference surface or elevation; you materialize it by setting benchmarks. On a large survey, one primary benchmark might sit at city hall, with secondary benchmarks distributed across the project area, all tied to the same datum.

The term datum comes from the Latin for 'given thing' and entered English surveying vocabulary in the 19th century. It reflects the idea that the surveyor does not create the reference; it is given, fixed, and survives the project. This is why old benchmarks still exist on bridges and public buildings: they serve future surveys that must tie new work to historical data. Losing a datum means losing the ability to compare past and present measurements meaningfully.
