The inner end of a drift or tunnel.

Dead end: a tunnel section that goes nowhere

In underground mining, a dead end is the inward terminus of a drift, heading, or working tunnel that has no through passage. It is simply the point where the tunnel stops, either because the mineralized zone has been exhausted, the geological conditions became unsuitable, or the advance was intentionally halted. Unlike a main haulage road or a connecting passage between two sections, a dead end represents a branch route with only one way in and one way out.

Dead ends are created during development work when miners drive lateral passages off a main heading to follow a vein, a lens of ore, or to explore promising ground. In coal mines, dead ends extend into the coal seam itself; in metalliferous mines, they may follow the dip or strike of an ore body. The depth of a dead end can range from a few metres in shallow exploration work to several hundred metres in mature operations.

Ventilation and Safety Challenges

The critical problem with dead ends is ventilation. Air flowing into a tunnel will stagnate at the dead end if not properly managed. Methane in coal mines or other noxious gases accumulate at the terminus, creating dangerous conditions. Modern mines control this with dedicated ventilation splits, using stopping (temporary walls) and ducting to force fresh air to the dead end and withdraw contaminated air separately. Failure to maintain adequate air flow is a serious hazard that can trap workers or cause explosive gas pockets.

Dead ends also complicate escape routes and emergency procedures. A worker at the face must traverse the entire length of the dead end to reach the main passage, which can be critical in an emergency. Regulations in most jurisdictions require refuges, communication systems, and clear egress procedures for all dead end workings. Abandoned dead ends must be properly sealed or marked to prevent accidental entry.

The term reflects the literal topology of the workings: a passage with a dead (inactive, terminal) end. It is distinguished from a through drive, which connects two points, and from a stall or working face, which describes the actual ore extraction point. Dead ends are a permanent fixture of mine development but require constant management to remain safe.
