A furrow left in the field that is slightly wider than twice the width of a plow bottom, usually occurring at the completion of a field.

A dead furrow is the unplowed strip or slight ridge left in a field after the plow has completed its passes. It forms because the plow operator must begin and end the work somewhere, and the final passes leave a strip that is roughly twice the plow bottom width, slightly raised and unworked. Unlike a regular furrow, it receives no turning or mixing of soil.

On a moldboard plow with a 14-inch bottom (the typical working width), the dead furrow is typically 28 to 32 inches across. It marks the edge where the plow switched direction or where the operator lifted the plow at the field boundary. In flat terrain, it appears as a gentle ridge; on slopes, water can collect along it during rain. The soil remains compacted and undisturbed because the plow never fully engaged it.

Dead furrows occur at predictable locations: most commonly at the center of the field if the operator worked outward from a centerline, or around the perimeter if working inward. Experienced operators minimize them by careful planning. Some farmers use the dead furrow intentionally as a guide for the next season's plowing, since it marks the exact edge of completed work. Others view it as wasted ground and plan their field layout to position dead furrows along field edges or fence lines.

Management and consequences

The dead furrow can become a problem in row crop farming because it creates an obstacle for later cultivation and harvesting equipment. Many operators deliberately plow it out during a subsequent pass or use it as a waterway or marker. In some regions, farmers simply accept the dead furrow as inevitable and work it into their row spacing calculations. The term itself comes from the furrow being dead, or inactive, because the plow did not finish its work there.

On modern farms with GPS guidance, dead furrows are less pronounced because operators can maintain more precise parallel passes and plan the field layout to minimize unplowed areas. On smaller or irregularly shaped fields, however, they remain common and visible.
