deciamp: one-tenth of an ampere, rarely used in practice

A deciamp (dA) is a unit of electrical current equal to 0.1 amperes. It sits in the SI metric hierarchy as a deci- prefix unit, scaling downward from the ampere by a factor of ten. In principle, it occupies a defined slot in the decimal system for measuring current flow, but it is almost never encountered in industrial practice or technical specification.

The ampere itself is the base SI unit for current, and the prefix deci- (meaning one-tenth) follows the standard naming convention established for metric quantities. Milliamps (mA) and microamps (μA) are the practical submultiples used in most electrical work, leaving the deciamp in an awkward middle ground. A current of 0.5 amperes is simply stated as 500 milliamps rather than 5 deciamps. This gap in practical usage mirrors similar neglect of other deci- units across science and engineering.

Where it does not appear

The deciamp has no standard role in electronics, power distribution, instrumentation, or electrical testing. Analogue and digital meters are calibrated and labeled in amperes, milliamps, microamps, or nanoamps, jumping over the deci- decade entirely. Equipment specifications, datasheets, and technical drawings omit the unit entirely. Even in SI-rigorous jurisdictions, the term carries no practical currency.

The deciamp exists as a theoretical construct within the SI system to maintain mathematical consistency across the metric hierarchy. Its nonexistence in real-world metrology reflects how industrial practice diverges from perfect decimal symmetry. When specifying or measuring current, technicians and engineers work with units that align with the actual magnitudes encountered in their applications, not with every theoretically defined subdivision of the base unit.
