yoctolitre: a trillionth of a trillionth of a litre

The yoctolitre is a unit of volume derived from the litre by application of the SI prefix yocto-, which denotes 10⁻²⁴. One yoctolitre therefore equals 10⁻²⁷ cubic metres or 10⁻³⁰ cubic centimetres. The symbol is yL. It is the smallest volume unit in the metric system and exists primarily as a theoretical construct within metrology standards; no practical measurement in this range occurs in industrial work.

Volume measurement in industry operates across a vast range. At the largest scales, cubic metres and cubic kilometres serve civil and environmental work. At the other extreme, nanotechnology and molecular research may reference volumes down to femtolitres or attolitres when describing liquid handling or microfluidic channels. The yoctolitre occupies a realm so far below practical measurement that it exists in the same territory as individual molecular or atomic dimensions. A litre of water contains roughly 3.3 × 10²² water molecules; a yoctolitre would represent a volume containing far fewer than one molecule on average.

SI prefixes form a coherent system that spans from yotta- (10²⁴) down to yocto- (10⁻²⁴). The yoctolitre was standardised as part of this complete set when yocto and zepto were adopted in 1991, ensuring that the metric system had no gaps. Metrologists and standards bodies maintain all prefix combinations for internal consistency and to permit any future technology or research domain to use whichever unit proves convenient. The existence of the yoctolitre in reference tables is therefore administrative completeness rather than practical necessity.

In practice, measurement and inspection work in industry stops at scales where calibrated instruments and statistical meaning exist. Volumes below the picometre range fall outside the scope of dimensional measurement, chemical analysis, and flow control. Standards bodies publish yoctolitres in conversion tables and SI brochures so that a researcher who does need to express an extremely small theoretical volume has a term to use, but you will not find it on a gauge, a specification, or a process sheet in any factory or laboratory.
