A decigram is one tenth of a gram, or 100 milligrams. Its symbol is dg. It occupies an awkward middle ground in the metric system: too small to be useful for most solid materials in trade, yet too large for the precision work where metric mass actually matters. You will rarely encounter it in industrial contexts outside teaching or historical documents.
The metric system defines SI prefixes in powers of 1000 starting from the base unit. The gram itself sits oddly as a base unit for mass (the actual SI base is the kilogram), and the deci prefix, meaning 10, breaks the 1000-step pattern. This creates a unit that fits nowhere comfortably: the kilogram and gram handle everyday commerce, while milligrams and micrograms serve pharmaceutical, chemical, and precision manufacturing work. The decigram was included for mathematical completeness, not practical need.
In weighing and inspection work, you will use the milligram (mg) for sensitive applications like tablet weight or gemstone mass, and the gram (g) or kilogram (kg) for everything heavier. Measurement instruments skip directly between these units. An analytical balance readable to 0.001 g will display milligrams, not decigrams. A platform scale works in kilograms. No standard industrial process calls specifically for decigram accuracy.
When decigrams do appear, it is usually in older technical literature, commodity standards from certain countries, or in conversion tables. A 500 g reference weight might be described as 5000 dg in a historical document, but modern calibration certificates and weight sets avoid the unit entirely. Recognition matters more than use: you need to know what it is if you encounter it, but you will not need to work with it.
