Zettametre: the 10²¹ scale where astronomy meets SI
A zettametre (Zm) is a unit of length in the International System of Units (SI) representing 1021 metres, or one sextillion metres in the short scale. It exists as part of the SI prefix hierarchy but has almost no practical use in everyday measurement or industrial applications. The term combines the SI prefix "zetta," derived from the Italian "zetta" (seven, reflecting the 1021 scale as the seventh power of 1000), with the base unit metre.
The zettametre sits at the extreme upper limit of the SI unit ladder, far beyond the exametre (1018 m) and petametre (1015 m) that occasionally appear in astrophysical contexts. To place this in perspective: the observable universe has a radius of approximately 4.4 × 1026 metres, meaning it spans roughly 44,000 zettametres. No standard instrument, gauge, or measurement system in metrology or inspection trades would ever use this unit operationally.
The zettametre exists primarily as a defined constant within SI nomenclature, established through the BIPM (International Bureau of Weights and Measures) system of prefixes.
