A delta hinge is a pivot joint fitted to a helicopter or gyrocopter rotor blade, mounted with its axis parallel to the plane in which the rotor disk rotates. This orientation allows the blade to move up and down, or flap, as aerodynamic loads and rotor speed change during flight. The hinge itself is typically a steel pin or bolt running spanwise, secured in a matching bore in the blade root and in a corresponding fitting on the rotor hub.

The mechanical purpose of blade flap is critical to rotor stability. As a blade advances through the forward travel portion of its rotation, it generates greater lift and tends to rise; as it retreats, it generates less lift and tends to fall. Without flapping, these asymmetric loads would create a gyroscopic couple that would destabilize the aircraft. The delta hinge absorbs this motion, converting it into harmless vertical oscillation that the rotor hub, mast, and fuselage are designed to handle.

The term delta comes from the angular geometry of the setup. Viewed from certain angles, the relationship between the flap axis, the blade's span, and the rotor rotation plane forms a triangular pattern, suggesting the Greek letter delta. On some designs, the delta hinge is also called a flap hinge or simply a blade flap joint; military and civilian specifications use the term interchangeably.

Variants and Maintenance Concerns

Delta hinges are manufactured with tight tolerances to minimize play, which must be regularly inspected during maintenance. Excessive clearance in the hinge bore allows blade flutter, a destructive oscillation that can loosen fasteners, crack blade roots, and eventually lead to in-flight blade failure. Corrosion attack on the hinge pin, particularly in salt-air environments, reduces bearing surface and increases wear. Many hinges are sealed with grease fittings and require periodic lubrication; others are treated as sealed units and cannot be serviced in place.

A delta hinge differs from a lag hinge, which permits blade motion in the plane of rotation, and from the pitch axis, which controls blade angle for collective and cyclic control. The delta hinge is purely a passive load-carrying joint; it is not actuated. The blade flaps freely within limits set by hard stops, mechanical restraints, or hydraulic dampers that prevent excessive motion that could damage control rods and swashplate linkages.
