In lithographic printing, desensitize means chemically treating the blank areas of a stone or metal plate so they will not accept oil-based printing ink. The image areas remain ink-receptive; the non-image areas become ink-repellent. This separation is essential to lithography's core principle: that grease and water do not mix.
On a limestone or aluminum plate, the image is drawn or photo-exposed with a greasy crayon, pencil, or photoresist. Everything else is bare stone or bare metal. Desensitizing applies a thin layer of gum arabic, acid, or specialized chemical compounds (often gum and nitric acid mixed) to the non-image portions. This layer bonds to the substrate and creates a hydrophilic (water-loving) surface that repels hydrophobic ink.
Desensitizing typically happens after image exposure and before the first ink and water rolling. The chemical is swept across the plate with a sponge or roller, often in combination with water. Timing matters: the gum must set long enough to protect the non-image area during the press run, but not so long that it hardens onto the image area and resists ink transfer. The strength of the acid in the desensitizing solution varies by plate type and image detail; fine halftones require gentler treatment than bold line work.
Aluminum plates, which became standard from the 1960s onward, desensitize more readily than stone because aluminum oxide bonds strongly to gum and acid compounds. Stone requires more aggressive or longer treatment. Over-desensitizing can cause the image itself to repel ink (called scumming), while under-desensitizing allows the non-image area to accept ink, causing fill-in or toning.
In modern pre-sensitized plates, the desensitizing chemistry is often built into the plate coating itself, activated by the washout step after exposure. However, many shops still perform a secondary desensitize step with fountain solution or gum arabic to extend press stability and manage toning over long runs.
