To reverse out is to invert the tonal relationship between ink and substrate, typically by printing a light colour or leaving white paper where dark ink would normally sit, and printing dark ink where light would normally appear. The term most commonly describes printing white or light text and graphics against a dark background, though it can apply to any deliberate inversion of the expected ink-to-paper contrast.
The technique requires careful technical planning. On offset presses, reversing out usually means printing a solid colour first, then either leaving areas unprinted to show the substrate beneath, or printing a lighter ink over it. The most straightforward method is to print a solid dark area, then knock out (leave white) the letterforms or image shapes. For process colour work, reversing out demands precise plate preparation and registration, since any misalignment becomes immediately visible when light shapes sit against dark fields.
Practical constraints and setup
Reversed-out text has real legibility limits. Thin serifs disappear at small point sizes, and halftone dots in reversed areas tend to plug or fill in, particularly in mid-tones. Point size typically must be increased by 10 to 20 percent compared to positive (normal) text. Paper choice matters significantly: heavily absorbent stock can cause ink spread that fattens the reversed shapes; coated stocks hold crispness better. Density of the background ink affects perceived weight of the reversed element, so a darker background makes white type appear lighter than the same type reversed from a mid-tone field.
In digital printing and screen printing, the workflow is more forgiving. Digital systems separate the reversed elements into a knockout layer during ripping. Screen printing requires only that the stencil be cut or photo-emulsion be exposed to define the reversed shapes, with the substrate showing through the non-image areas.
The term originates from hand typesetting and letterpress work, where reversing out meant physically removing type or blocking material to create white space against an inked surround. The logic transferred to offset lithography, where it describes the photographic reversal of image polarity on the printing plate. In modern usage, it simply indicates any inverted contrast relationship in the final print.
