A service that allows an international (or other) telephone call to be made indirectly through another number, thus avoiding the usual call routing and potentially saving money.

dial-around: bypass routing to cut long-distance costs

A dial-around is a telephone routing method where a caller dials an access number (often a local or toll-free number) instead of using their primary carrier's default routing. The access number connects to an alternative carrier's switching equipment, which then completes the destination call. This approach became common in the 1990s when long-distance rates varied sharply between carriers, allowing customers to route calls through cheaper providers without changing their primary service contract.

The mechanics are straightforward: the caller dials the alternative carrier's access code, waits for a second dial tone, then dials the destination number. Early dial-around services required entering an account PIN after the access number, though this was often optional for toll-free access numbers. The call connects through the alternative carrier's network rather than the default carrier's trunk lines, so billing and quality may differ from standard calls.

Cost Structure and Market Context

Dial-around services thrived when regional Bell companies and AT&T charged significantly more for long-distance than competitive carriers. A caller might save 20-40 percent on interstate calls by dialing around, especially to destinations like Mexico or Canada. The practice forced incumbent carriers to lower their rates to compete. Many dial-around providers charged per-call fees (50 cents to 2 dollars) or monthly subscriptions, betting that the long-distance savings justified the friction of an extra dialing step.

The trade-off was convenience and call quality. Dial-around added 5-10 seconds of setup time per call. Some carriers had network congestion or routing delays. Billing disputes arose when customers misunderstood which carrier was billing for which call, especially on shared lines. By the early 2000s, flat-rate wireless plans and VoIP services reduced the financial incentive for dial-around, and the practice declined sharply.

Today, dial-around survives mainly in niche contexts: businesses with high volumes of calls to specific regions, individuals in areas with limited carrier options, and some commercial calling card operators. The term itself signals an era when call routing and carrier selection were customer-managed rather than automatic, and when the cost difference between carriers made routing choices economically significant.
