uplead

The line or lines connecting the output of a transmitter to its antenna.

uplead: the wire from transmitter to antenna

An uplead is the transmission line that carries high-frequency electrical signals from a transmitter's output stage to the antenna. It is the physical bridge between the powered circuit and the radiating element, and its design directly affects how much power actually reaches the antenna and how cleanly the signal radiates into space.

The uplead must be a controlled-impedance transmission line, typically 50 ohms in modern RF systems, to minimize reflections and power loss. Common constructions include coaxial cable (a center conductor surrounded by a dielectric and outer shield), open-wire feed lines (two parallel conductors separated by spacers), and rigid waveguide for very high power applications. The choice depends on frequency, power level, and physical constraints. At VHF and UHF frequencies, coaxial cable dominates because it is compact and provides shielding against interference. At microwave frequencies and in high-power transmitters, rigid feedlines or waveguide become necessary to handle the power density and reduce attenuation.

Impedance mismatch between the transmitter output, the uplead, and the antenna is the primary failure mode. If the line is not properly terminated, energy reflects back toward the transmitter, creating standing waves and wasting power as heat in the cable. The standing wave ratio (SWR) quantifies this mismatch; values above 2:1 indicate significant losses. Poor shielding in the uplead also allows the transmission line itself to radiate, degrading pattern and efficiency, or to pick up interference that degrades signal quality.

Practical installation and maintenance

Physical routing of the uplead must avoid sharp bends (minimum bend radius depends on cable type), water accumulation in the outer conductor, and proximity to metal structures that alter the electromagnetic field. Connections at both ends must be weathertight and properly crimped or soldered to avoid corrosion and intermittent contact. In outdoor installations, cable runs should be supported every 1 to 2 meters to prevent sagging that stresses connectors or creates water traps.

The term uplead is older and most common in broadcast radio and marine radio contexts; modern RF engineers often use the more general term feedline or transmission line instead. However, uplead remains standard in regulatory documents and equipment specifications, particularly for AM/FM broadcast transmitters where it describes the specific run from the final amplifier stage to the base of a vertical mast antenna.
