A digital meter is an electronic device that measures and records consumption of utilities, most commonly electricity and water, then transmits that data to a utility company's central system. Unlike analog meters with spinning dials or rotating discs, digital meters display consumption as numerical readouts on an LED or LCD screen and store usage records in onboard memory or transmit them wirelessly to a receiver.

Electric digital meters typically measure kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed by recording voltage and current at the service entrance. Water meters measure volume in cubic meters or gallons. Gas meters measure volume in cubic feet or cubic meters. The internal electronics convert analog sensor data into digital form, apply calibration factors, and log timestamps. Most modern units are solid-state devices with no moving parts, which reduces mechanical wear and improves accuracy compared to older electromechanical designs.

Variants and transmission methods

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meters, sometimes called smart meters, use radio frequency or power line communication to transmit data automatically, eliminating manual meter reading. Interval data meters record consumption in 15-minute or hourly buckets rather than just total usage. Demand response meters can track peak demand separately from base load, which utility companies use for rate calculation. Two-way communication meters allow utilities to remotely disconnect service or adjust operational parameters without a technician visit. Some industrial models include additional channels for monitoring voltage, power factor, or harmonic distortion.

Common failure modes include display malfunction, memory corruption from voltage spikes, and communication module failure in AMI units. Tampering or magnetic interference can cause measurements to drift, making sealed designs and cryptographic data validation increasingly standard. Battery backup keeps real-time clocks and non-volatile memory active during power outages, though backup duration varies widely by model.

Digital meters became standard equipment in utility infrastructure during the 2000s and 2010s. The term distinguishes these devices from analog or mechanical meters still in service on many older circuits. Regulatory requirements for accuracy, data retention, and privacy vary by jurisdiction and utility, affecting hardware specifications and firmware update protocols. Installation typically requires a qualified technician to interrupt service and verify calibration against baseline loads.
