MRB: formal failure investigation and disposition
An MRB, or Material Review Board, is a structured process for examining components, materials, or assemblies that fail inspection, testing, or functional requirements before they leave the factory or reach the customer. The board convenes to determine root cause, assess risk, and decide whether to scrap, rework, return, or accept the defective item under controlled conditions.
The MRB meeting typically includes engineering, quality, manufacturing, and sometimes supply chain personnel. They review physical evidence, test data, process records, and supplier documentation. The board documents findings on an MRB report, which becomes part of permanent quality records. Decisions are formalized and tracked to closure: if rework is approved, it must be re-inspected; if the part is accepted as-is despite the defect, the justification and any use restrictions are recorded for traceability.
MRBs handle both in-process failures and field returns. A single bad solder joint on a PCB assembly, a dimensional out-of-spec casting, a cracked weld, or a material shipment with incorrect hardness all trigger the process. In aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturing, MRB rigor and documentation are contractual and regulatory requirements. In lower-consequence industries, the gate may be less formal, though the principle remains: don't ship unknown risk without deliberate decision.
The alternative to an MRB is either immediate scrap or shipment without investigation, both of which create exposure. Scrap without analysis loses improvement data; shipping without review hides latent defects and erodes customer confidence. An effective MRB balances cost recovery against risk and quality credibility.
The term "board" reflects that dispositions require consensus and multi-functional accountability, not a single inspector's judgment. MRB reports also seed corrective actions: if a supplier's plating is flaking, the MRB triggers a supplier quality review; if a process parameter drifts, MRB data drives preventive adjustment before the next lot fails.
