DSC: a camera that captures images as digital files, not film

A digital still camera is a self-contained optical and electronic instrument that captures a photograph as a digital image file rather than on chemical film. Light enters through a lens, strikes a solid-state image sensor (either CCD or CMOS type), and the sensor converts that light into electrical signals. These signals are processed by the camera's internal electronics, compressed into a standard format such as JPEG or raw, and written to removable storage media or internal memory. The resulting file can be transferred to a computer, edited, printed, or shared immediately without darkroom processing.

Digital still cameras range from compact fixed-lens models to interchangeable-lens systems with multiple optical elements and external flash units. Resolution is measured in megapixels, referring to the total pixel count of the sensor; a 12-megapixel sensor produces images roughly 4000 x 3000 pixels. Sensor size, typically ranging from 1/2.3 inches in pocket cameras to 35 mm full-frame in professional bodies, affects light sensitivity, depth of field capability, and dynamic range. Frame rate varies: consumer models may shoot 5 to 10 frames per second, while specialized industrial or scientific cameras can exceed 100 frames per second.

In industrial and technical work, digital still cameras have largely replaced film because they eliminate chemical processing delay, enable instant review of exposure, and integrate easily with data collection and quality control systems. Machine vision systems often employ specialized industrial cameras with custom sensors, lenses, and interfaces optimized for precision measurement or defect detection rather than photographic aesthetics. Many industrial cameras output uncompressed raw sensor data or connect directly to computers via USB, GigE Ethernet, or proprietary interfaces rather than writing to memory cards.

Common failure modes and constraints

Digital still cameras are vulnerable to moisture ingress, heat, impact, and dust contamination of the sensor. Sensor pixels degrade under prolonged exposure to intense light or heat. Storage media can corrupt if not handled properly or if the camera loses power during a write operation. Battery life is finite and depends on shooting frequency, flash use, and display brightness. The image sensor cannot be cleaned safely by the user in most consumer and professional models; sensor dust requires professional service or will appear as dark spots in images shot at small apertures.

The term digital still camera distinguishes devices that capture single frames from video cameras, which record continuous image sequences. The acronym DSC became common in the 1990s and early 2000s as digital imaging emerged. Today, the boundary between camera types has blurred: most digital still cameras record video, and many smartphones function adequately as still cameras for informal documentation, though they sacrifice the optical and sensor capabilities of dedicated devices. In industrial contexts, the choice between a specialized digital camera, a smartphone, and a dedicated machine vision system depends on resolution requirements, data format needs, and integration with control systems.
