To ditch an aircraft means to bring it down deliberately onto water when continuing to fly is no longer possible. This is a controlled crash landing, not a recovery procedure. The pilot chooses the water surface over land because it offers the best survival outcome given the aircraft's condition, fuel state, or engine failure pattern. Water provides a softer energy absorption than terrain, and rescue is often faster over populated waterways or shipping lanes.

The term comes from the verb "to ditch" in the sense of discarding or abandoning, though the goal is not to lose the aircraft but to preserve the crew and passengers. Military aviation adopted the word first; civilian operators began using it routinely during the jet age as transoceanic flight became standard. A ditch is not the same as an uncontrolled water impact, which is a crash; ditching requires pilot input and intentional planning, even if those moments last only seconds.

Procedure and aircraft factors

Before ditching, crews reduce speed to the slowest safe airspeed to minimize impact forces. Landing gear is retracted to reduce drag and prevent tumbling. Flaps are lowered partially to increase lift and reduce descent rate. The approach is made into the wind and parallel to any visible swell pattern. Impact occurs at the lowest practical airspeed, typically 50 to 80 knots depending on aircraft weight and design.

Amphibious aircraft and flying boats are designed to ditch; their hulls and reinforced fuselages can withstand water impact and float afterward. Wheeled aircraft ditching is more dangerous because the fuselage is not sealed for water immersion. Pressurized airliners must be depressurized before water entry or the cabin will collapse inward. Emergency exits flood rapidly, and evacuation must happen within minutes in cold water.

Modern long-range aircraft carry life rafts, signaling equipment, and flotation aids specifically for ditch scenarios. Training for ditch procedures is mandatory for crews on routes where land is not within glide distance, particularly over oceans and polar regions. The term remains part of standard aviation vocabulary despite the rarity of actual ditchings in commercial operations, where mechanical reliability and alternate airports have made the scenario uncommon.
