Installation context determines which opener makes sense. Accessibility compliance (ADA in the US, Equality Act 2010 in the UK) often requires power-assist doors in facilities that serve the public or employees. Commercial and industrial buildings use door openers to manage traffic flow, maintain environmental zones (clean rooms, production areas), or integrate doors with fire safety systems. In hospitals and food processing plants, hands-free or touchless openers reduce contamination risk by eliminating the need to touch handles.
Failure modes and maintenance
Door openers fail when solenoids burn out (typically after 100,000 to 500,000 cycles depending on the coil design), when pneumatic lines leak or fittings corrode, when electrical contacts pit or stick, or when mechanical linkages bend or seize. Power failures disable electric models unless they include battery backup or fail-safe design (e.g., a mag-lock that defaults to unlocked when de-energized). Corrosion is a serious problem in humid, caustic, or salt-air environments; stainless steel or powder-coated finishes extend service life but cost more upfront.
The term 'door opener' emerged in the 1960s as electromechanical systems began replacing purely mechanical devices. Older trades sometimes use more specific names: 'electric strike' for latch-release devices, 'door closer' for the units that control closing speed, and 'access control' or 'access opener' when referring to systems that unlock on credential verification. In safety documentation and procurement, always confirm whether the specification calls for power-to-open, power-to-close, or fail-safe behavior, as these have different electrical and mechanical requirements.
