A hosepack is a backpack system that carries coiled fire hose and allows a firefighter to deploy water supply independently from a fixed hydrant or truck connection. The hose, typically 1 inch (25 mm) diameter, is wound tightly into the pack frame so it can be carried to locations where vehicle access is limited or impossible. A nozzle and shut-off valve are integrated into the pack, fed directly from the hose bundle, allowing the wearer to pressurize and spray immediately upon reaching the target.

The frame itself is usually aluminum or steel, built to distribute weight across the shoulders and hips like any load-bearing pack. Total weight typically ranges from 30 to 50 pounds when fully loaded with hose. The hose is packed in tight coils to minimize kinking and friction losses that would reduce pressure. Some designs feature quick-disconnect couplings at the base so additional hose sections can be chained together if longer reach is needed.

Pressure and Supply Limits

A hosepack operates under atmospheric pressure or low pressure supplied by gravity and initial momentum, not a pump. This limits its effective range and spray force compared to a pressurized truck line. Water must be sourced from a portable tank, natural water body, or low-pressure gravity feed positioned above the wearer. Many models are designed for initial fire knockdown and containment during the first minutes of response, particularly in wildland or confined-space incidents where crew access is the first priority.

The main wear points are the hose coupling threads, nozzle seals, and valve seats, which corrode or clog from mineral deposits and sediment in untreated water. Hose itself can develop cracks from UV exposure or freezing cycles if not stored correctly. Routine flushing and storage in shade are standard maintenance practices.

Hosepacks are common in wildland firefighting, structural rescue in remote areas, and industrial emergency response. They have no single standardized design; manufacturers vary nozzle size, hose diameter, and pack ergonomics to suit local water sources and terrain. The term itself describes the function rather than a specific product class.
