A dot matrix printer forms characters and images by firing individual pins (typically arranged in a 7×9 or 9×9 grid) against an inked ribbon onto paper. The pins strike the ribbon in a pattern that recreates each letter or shape through an array of dots. This is an impact printer, meaning the physical collision transfers ink; the print head advances horizontally while the paper advances vertically, building the image line by line.

The print head contains electromagnets that pull pins backward against a return spring. When current flows through each magnet, the corresponding pin shoots forward momentarily, striking the ribbon and paper with a sharp click. Arrays of 9 pins became standard in the 1980s because they allowed reasonably legible output while remaining mechanically simple. A 24-pin head offered finer resolution but at higher cost and slower speed.

Speed, noise, and multipart paper

Dot matrix printers typically operate at 100 to 600 characters per second, depending on quality mode and pin count. This made them far faster than daisy-wheel printers for bulk printing. The mechanism is inherently loud, generating a characteristic high-pitched hammering that made them unpopular in shared office spaces. However, this same durability and speed proved ideal for warehouse picking tickets, shipping labels, and industrial logbooks where speed and robustness mattered more than silence.

A critical advantage was the ability to handle multipart forms (typically 2 to 6 sheets with carbon or carbonless stock) in a single pass. The impact force was sufficient to mark all layers at once, eliminating the need for separate printing runs. This made dot matrix essential for generating purchase orders, invoices, and manifests simultaneously. Tractor feed mechanisms pulled the paper accurately through the platen, handling both continuous forms and single sheets with a friction feed option.

Dot matrix printers began declining in the 1990s as inkjet and laser technology matured, but they remain in use where toughness, speed, and multipart capability are essential. Their ability to handle poor-quality paper, extreme temperatures, and years of continuous operation means some industrial sites still operate examples from the 1980s. Ribbons and impact heads are relatively inexpensive consumables compared to printer replacement, which keeps older units economical despite their age and noise.
