A drag path is a temporary route cut or compacted into forest floor by repeated passes of a skidder moving felled timber. The skidder, typically a tracked or wheeled machine with winch and grapple, pulls logs along this path from the felling site (stump) to a central landing where logs are staged, bucked, and loaded. The path exists only as long as the harvest operation; it may regenerate or remain as compacted soil depending on site conditions and post-harvest treatment.
Drag paths differ from permanent logging roads in both construction and lifespan. A logging road handles repeated traffic for years and typically receives grading or surface material. A drag path is informal: it emerges naturally from machine traffic, remains unimproved, and disappears when the operation ends. Forest managers distinguish them because drag paths create less erosion risk and environmental disturbance than engineered roads, but more than untracked forest. Spacing of drag paths affects both productivity and soil damage; machines pulling half-logs move faster and cause less compaction per unit area harvested.
The actual width and depth depend on machine size, soil type, and load mass. A tracked skidder moving 8 to 12 ton logs over moist clay will cut a visible rut 2 to 4 meters wide and 0.3 to 0.6 meters deep within a few passes. Sandy or well-drained soils recover faster; saturated soils may remain rutted for months or years. Rock outcrops and tree roots provide natural reinforcement and reduce rutting. Steep slopes increase drag path damage because machines must work harder and logs slide, widening the path and destabilizing soil.
Why the name matters in planning
Foresters use "drag path" to signal that the route is temporary and has lower engineering standards than a haul road. This distinction affects planning: drag paths need only to be passable during the operation and are often not widened, crowned, or culverted. However, the term can obscure real damage; a drag path on a slope with poor soil may erode severely after harvest and send sediment into streams. Modern forestry regulations often require drag paths to be marked, spaced to minimize impact, and sometimes closed and stabilized after use.
Regional vocabulary varies: "skid trail," "skid road," and "drag path" are used interchangeably in most North American forestry, though some regions prefer one term. The machine using it, the skidder, gives the path its functional name. A well-planned harvest operation maps drag paths in advance, clusters felling to minimize path density, and considers gradient, soil bearing capacity, and hydrological flow. Poor drag path design wastes fuel and machine time; too many paths degrade the site and invite regulatory scrutiny.
