The chain that connects together engine and tender, or carriages and wagons.

drag-chain: the coupler that holds train sections together

A drag-chain is a heavy-duty chain, typically 9 to 12 feet long, that mechanically couples a locomotive to its tender or one rail vehicle to another. It transmits the pulling force needed to move the train forward and helps hold the train together under load and during braking. The chain runs between draghooks or drawheads mounted on the frame of each vehicle, allowing articulated movement while maintaining mechanical connection.

The chain itself is usually wrought iron or mild steel, forged in links of 1 to 1.5 inches diameter, chosen for both strength and some flexibility to absorb shock loads. Each end of the chain attaches to a hook or eye fastened to the vehicle frame. The length is kept just short enough to prevent slack but long enough to allow the coupling vehicles to move relative to one another on curves and during acceleration. Wear and corrosion are managed by regular inspection and lubrication with grease or oil.

Variations and complications

Shorter, heavier drag-chains couple freight wagons in tight formations. Longer, slightly lighter chains are used between locomotive and tender to allow greater articulation. Some systems use a central ring or coupling link for added strength. On older narrow-gauge railways, proportionally smaller chains are standard. The chain may incorporate a screw coupling or a simple pin-and-eye arrangement at each end depending on the vehicle type and railway company practice.

Failure modes are well understood in rail operation. A broken drag-chain means immediate train separation, which is catastrophic if it occurs on grades or in yards with moving traffic. Fractures typically result from metal fatigue after years of cyclic loading, impact damage during shunting, or corrosion that weakens the links. Slack develops when chain stretches under use, reducing load-bearing capacity and allowing dangerous jerking during braking.

The term drag-chain reflects its function: it drags or pulls the connected vehicles along. Modern main-line railways have largely replaced drag-chains with automatic couplers like the Coupler or Janney systems, which are safer and faster to operate. However, drag-chains remain in use on heritage railways, industrial sidings, and some narrow-gauge lines where traditional equipment is maintained or preferred.
