draw: to pull metal into wire or tube form
In metalworking, drawing is the process of pulling a metal rod, bar, or tube through a die of progressively smaller diameter to reduce its cross-section and increase its length. The die is a hardened steel block with a tapered hole; as the metal is forced through under tension, it stretches and thins. A single draw might reduce diameter by 10 to 30 percent depending on the metal, the reduction angle, and lubrication. Wire drawing typically uses multiple passes through smaller and smaller dies until the final gauge is reached.
The metal must be ductile enough to move through the die without cracking. Copper, aluminum, and low-carbon steel are common draw stock. Hard metals or work-hardened material may need annealing between draws to restore workability. The drawn product emerges with improved straightness, surface finish, and dimensional consistency compared to hot-rolled or cast starting material. Tensile strength also increases due to work hardening, which can be either desirable or requiring later annealing depending on the end use.
Variants and equipment
Wire drawing uses a draw bench or draw frame: the metal is gripped by a powered capstan or drum that pulls it through a series of dies mounted in a die block. Tube drawing feeds a seamless or welded tube over a mandrel, a tapered rod held inside the tube, to control wall thickness as the die reduces the outer diameter. Rod drawing for bar stock operates similarly but at larger scales and slower speeds. Each method requires coolant or drawing compound, typically a mix of soap, oil, or synthetic agents, to reduce friction and heat.
The name comes from the mechanical action of pulling (drawing) the metal forward. Related terms include redraw (a second pass through smaller dies to reach finer gauge), annealing (heat treatment to soften work-hardened metal), and die wear (gradual enlargement of die holes, which increases finished diameter and eventually forces die replacement). Drawing is distinct from extrusion, which pushes metal through a die, and from cold rolling, which compresses metal between rotating drums.
Drawing is used to produce wire for electrical cable, telecommunications fiber, fasteners, springs, and mesh; tubing for hydraulics and medical devices; and rod for machining stock, fasteners, and structural applications. It is valued in manufacturing because it delivers repeatable dimensions, good surface finish, and work hardening in a single or few operations, making it economical for high-volume production of long products.
