An open-mouthed bar at the end of a car, which receives a coupling link and pin by which the car is drawn. It is usually provided with a spring to give elasticity to the connection between the cars of a train.

A drawbar is a forged steel casting bolted to the end frame of a rail car, designed to accept a coupling link and pin that transmit pulling force from one car to the next. The bar itself is shaped like an open mouth or slot, typically 1 to 1.5 inches wide, and sits at approximately bumper height. Inside this opening, a draft gear (the spring mechanism) absorbs impacts and allows slight compression and extension as the train starts, stops, and navigates curves.
The draft gear is the critical component within the drawbar assembly. Historically, these used rubber blocks sandwiched between metal plates; modern versions typically employ friction wedges or hydraulic dampeners. The gear serves two functions: it cushions sudden jerks when slack is taken up between cars, and it allows controlled give-and-take motion rather than rigid coupling. Without it, couplings would snap under the stresses of starting a heavy train or braking from speed.
Drawbar failure is a serious operational problem. Fatigue cracking develops at the attachment welds and around the slot opening, especially on high-tonnage freight cars or after repeated coupler impacts. A cracked drawbar can break completely during coupling or under load, causing a derailment or forcing an emergency uncoupling. Inspectors examine drawbars routinely for signs of cracking, corrosion pitting, or permanent deformation.
Coupling and standardization
The drawbar works in tandem with the Janney automatic coupler (or compatible variants like the Scharfenberg coupler in some regions). The coupler head drops into the drawbar slot and is locked by a follower, creating the connection. In North America, Class I railroads use standardized AAR (Association of American Railroads) couplings, meaning any drawbar must accept any approved coupler head. This standardization is fundamental to rail operations; a non-standard drawbar would prevent a car from being coupled to others.
Drawbar design varies by car type and intended load. Freight cars rated for 125+ ton loads have heavier castings and reinforced attachment points than passenger or lighter service cars. Some specialized cars, such as container flats, may have recessed or modified drawbar geometry to protect the coupling from impacts. The term "drawbar pull" refers to the maximum tensile force a drawbar and its draft gear can safely withstand, a rating that must never be exceeded in operation.
