drawboy: the child who pulled the loom's pattern threads
A drawboy was a child worker who sat above or beside a drawloom and manually operated the harness cords to raise and lower specific warp threads in sequence. The drawloom, an early form of programmable loom, used a system of hooks, cords, and a perforated card or paper roll to define which threads would be lifted for each pick of the weft. The drawboy's job was to read the pattern card (often called a draft) and pull the correct cords at the exact moment the weaver threw the shuttle, executing the mechanical memory of the design.
This was skilled child labor, not unskilled drudgery. A drawboy had to develop timing, spatial memory, and hand coordination. Work was done at speed, often pulling 5 to 10 cords in rapid succession for complex patterns. The role demanded concentration for hours; a mistimed pull would produce a misaligned pattern thread, creating a visible flaw in cloth that might span several inches of fabric. In European workshops, drawboys typically apprenticed from age 8 to 14, working alongside experienced weavers who trained them in pattern interpretation.
The drawboy system emerged in the 16th century as silk weavers in Italy and France created increasingly elaborate brocades and damasks. The arrangement persisted well into the 19th century, particularly in hand loom workshops producing high-value patterned cloth. A single drawloom might employ one or two drawboys depending on pattern density and loom width. Factory silk mills in the 1800s still employed drawboys, though mechanical harness looms gradually displaced the system in cotton and wool production.
The profession disappeared almost entirely with the invention of the jacquard loom around 1804, which replaced manual cord operation with a mechanical system of punched cards. However, drawboys remained necessary for certain handloom operations and specialty weaving through the 20th century, particularly in heritage textile work and high-end silk production. Their absence from modern mechanized mills marks one of industrial history's cleaner technological replacements of child labor, though the transition took decades.
