drillable: capable of being positioned in any direction

A drillable mechanism is one whose arm or manipulator can rotate and articulate freely to present a tool or bit at any angle and orientation within its reach envelope. This applies to machine tools, robotic arms, and spindle systems where the end tool must access surfaces that are not parallel to the machine's base or frame. The mechanism achieves this through multiple joints, typically at the shoulder, elbow, or wrist of the arm, which together allow six degrees of freedom or close to it.

In machining centres and multi-axis mills, drillable capability is essential for complex part geometry. A traditional vertical spindle cannot drill into an angled face without repositioning the workpiece, but a drillable head with three rotational axes can tilt and orient the spindle in place. Robotic arms used in assembly and manufacturing often carry drillable tool interfaces, allowing them to drill, ream, or countersink fastener holes at arbitrary angles without stopping to reorient the arm base.

Practical limits and constraints

Drillability does not mean unlimited freedom. The arm's working envelope, interference from the structure or workpiece geometry, and cable or coolant routing all constrain the achievable angles. High-speed spindles on drillable heads also demand that articulation joints be rigid and backlash-free; excessive play introduces runout that ruins hole accuracy and tool life. Spindle bearings and tool holders experience uneven loading when the tool is not vertical, which can shorten spindle life and increase vibration.

The term appears most often in machine tool specifications and robotics datasheets. It is sometimes confused with articulated, which describes only the arm's geometry, and with 5-axis capable, which specifies the number of controlled linear and rotational motions. A drillable head may enable 4-axis or 6-axis work depending on its construction and the axis count of the machine it serves.
