A drive unit is the powered mechanism mounted on a shaker conveyor that converts rotational or linear motion into the reciprocating (back-and-forth) action needed to move fragmented ore or coal along an inclined or horizontal trough. In underground mining operations, these units sit beneath or beside the conveyor deck and couple directly to the frame, imparting controlled jolts that prevent material from binding and keep the load flowing toward the collection or processing point.
The most common configuration uses an electric motor driving an eccentric shaft or crank mechanism, which produces a fixed stroke length and frequency, typically in the range of 10 to 20 cycles per minute depending on the material density and trough angle. Some older installations employ cam-driven systems; modern high-capacity operations may use hydraulic drive units that allow stroke adjustment without stopping the line. The mechanical advantage of the eccentric or crank directly determines the force applied to the conveyor deck, and this must match the weight and friction characteristics of the ore or coal being moved.
Failure modes in drive units are mechanical rather than novel. Bearing wear develops from sustained vibration and shock loading; eccentric shafts suffer fatigue cracks under cyclic stress, especially where coal dust infiltrates the bearing housings. Misalignment between motor and driven shaft causes premature wear of flexible couplings. In wet underground conditions, corrosion of the shaft and seizure of the bearing races occur if drainage and relubrication protocols fail. The unit's isolation from the main motor by a flexible coupling reduces shock transmission to the motor bearings, but this coupling itself is a wear item requiring periodic inspection.
The term drive unit emphasizes the functional role rather than construction detail; it is interchangeable with reciprocator or vibrator in older mining texts, though those terms are now less common. The unit is essential to the class of equipment known as inertial or gravity-assisted conveyors, which rely on repeated impulses rather than continuous friction to transport bulk solids. In surface facilities, similar mechanisms drive shaker tables in ore dressing, though those operate at higher frequency and finer stroke.
Maintenance of a drive unit focuses on bearing condition monitoring, shaft alignment, and coupling inspection. The motor itself may be mounted remotely and connected via flexible coupling, or integrated into a compact gearmotor assembly. In cramped underground headings, compact hydraulic or pneumatic drive units offer advantages over traditional electric motors, though they demand more frequent fluid servicing. Selection of the correct drive unit for a new or replaced conveyor line depends on the payload mass per meter of deck, the angle of inclination, and the required throughput in tonnes per hour.
