A thurst is the broken rock, coal, and timber that accumulates on the floor of a coal mine after the roof has fallen following extraction of the supporting pillars and stalls. It represents the chaotic pile of material left behind once a section of mine has been worked out and deliberately destressed by removing the props that held it up. The term is specific to coal mining and reflects the managed collapse strategy used to prevent sudden, uncontrolled falls in adjacent working areas.

In pillar-and-stall mining, workers extract coal while leaving behind massive vertical pillars of uncut coal to support the roof. Once a section is fully worked, or when a mine is being closed, these pillars are removed systematically, usually starting from the deepest part and working toward the exit. The overlying strata, no longer supported, falls in a controlled manner, crushing and fragmenting into what miners call the thurst.

Composition and hazard

The thurst typically consists of broken shale, sandstone, coal fragments, and rotted timber props, forming an unstable, irregular mass that can stand 20 to 40 feet high depending on the depth of the seam and the weight of overburden. The material is neither consolidated nor uniform, making it difficult to traverse or clear. Methane can be trapped within void spaces in the thurst, and spontaneous combustion of coal fragments is a documented risk, particularly in older workings where sulfide minerals oxidize.

The word appears to derive from the mechanical action of the roof thrusting downward, though historical mining texts do not always distinguish sharply between thurst, gob, and waste. In some regions and eras, thurst referred specifically to the immediate collapse debris, while gob (or gob pile) denoted the larger void space above it. The distinction mattered to ventilation planning and to decisions about whether a worked-out area could be allowed to remain closed or needed active management.

Modern coal mining largely moved away from pillar-and-stall toward longwall methods, which gradually and continuously collapse the roof as the face advances, leaving far less chaos in discrete heaps. Where pillar-and-stall is still practiced in shallow seams or difficult geology, understanding the thurst remains important for mine closure, stability assessment of remaining pillars, and prediction of surface subsidence.
