A driving van trailer is a non-powered railway vehicle fitted with a control cabin, allowing a driver to operate the locomotive from the rear of the train. It consists of a standard goods van or brake van body mounted on a bogie frame, with a fully equipped driver's cabin at one end. Pneumatic and electrical control lines run the length of the train to transmit brake commands, throttle signals, and other operational instructions back to the locomotive at the front. The driver sits in an elevated position to maintain sightlines along the train's length.
These vehicles became essential on freight railways, particularly in Britain, where long goods trains needed to be worked from both ends. A driving van trailer allows a single locomotive to haul a train efficiently without the need for a second engine, while still giving the operator visual and operational control over the entire consist. The trailer is sometimes called a driving van or a driving truck, depending on regional practice. Unlike a cab car on passenger railways, it carries no passengers and is used purely for train operation.
Construction and control systems
The cabin houses standard locomotive controls in miniature: brake valve, power handle (or equivalent control), and reverser. The air brake system must connect to the main train brake line, allowing the driver to apply or release brakes throughout the consist. Similarly, the electric or pneumatic signal line transmits throttle and direction commands to the locomotive. The vehicle itself has no engine and typically rides on a standard goods wagon bogie or a purpose-built four-wheel truck. Weight distribution must be carefully managed to ensure the trailer does not become unstable when the train is on gradients or curves.
Modern examples have been progressively withdrawn as remote control locomotive technology and longer hauling distances have reduced their operational advantage. However, some railways in Europe and freight operators elsewhere still use them for shunting operations and short-haul freight work. The driving van trailer represents an economical solution to the problem of operating long, single-engine trains on routes where a helper engine would be uneconomical and where cab cars are not permitted on freight stock.
