A train-mounted safety device which interacts with a trackside device to stop a train automatically if it passes a signal at danger (showing a red light).
tripcock: trackside brake trigger that enforces signals
A tripcock is a pivoted arm mounted on the underside of a locomotive or train that engages with a corresponding lineside device to apply the brakes automatically if the train passes a red signal. The trackside component, called a treadle or ramp, sits between the rails and lifts the tripcock arm as the train passes over it. If the signal ahead is at danger, the tripcock mechanism actuates the train's brake valve, forcing a penalty application regardless of driver action.
The system exists in two main configurations. The older mechanical tripcock relies on direct mechanical linkage: the lineside treadle physically lifts the tripcock arm, which trips a latch on the locomotive's brake valve. The more modern pneumatic tripcock uses air pressure from the lineside apparatus to trigger the brakes, allowing the system to work even if the trackside device is slightly fouled by dirt or ice. Both types are still in use on heritage railways and some national rail networks.
Placement and integration
The tripcock arm hangs about 150 to 200 millimetres below the frame, positioned to clear the treadle normally but engage it fully when the train is centered on the track. The lineside treadle sits in the four-foot (the gap between the rails) and must be set to lift at a force that the heaviest trains can overcome yet light enough that empty stock trains trigger it reliably. On older lines, multiple treadles are spaced at signal intervals so that a train passing a red signal encounters the corresponding treadle within a few train-lengths.Failure modes are well understood. A worn or slack tripcock arm may fail to engage the treadle, defeating the entire safety function. Conversely, a treadle clogged with ballast or frozen can jam the tripcock, causing false penalty applications. Modern railways favor continuous cab signalling systems over tripcocks because they avoid mechanical wear and do not depend on precise track geometry, but tripcocks remain legally mandated on many heritage lines and remain in service on parts of the British network and several European railways.
The name derives from the verb "to trip", meaning to actuate or release suddenly. The device originated in Victorian railway practice as a mechanical safeguard against human driver error and remains one of the oldest active automatic braking systems still in regular use. Its principles influenced later development of automatic train protection (ATP) systems, though the tripcock is purely a penalty device, not an advisory one.
