Dry construction in masonry means laying stone, brick, or block without mortar as a binding agent. Instead, units are stacked and fitted so tightly that gravity and friction alone hold them in place. This method appears in dry-stacked concrete block walls, dry stone walling (common in rural boundaries and landscaping), and some historical structures where mortar was scarce or where flexibility was valued.

The work demands precision in unit selection and placement. Stones or blocks must be relatively uniform in height within each course, and faces must align closely enough that wind and water infiltration remain manageable. Dry stacking of concrete masonry units typically produces walls 4 to 12 inches thick; gaps between units are minimized through careful selection but not eliminated. Some dry-stack systems use interlocking profiles or ledges to improve bearing and lateral resistance.

Structural limits and weather performance

Dry walls are weaker in tension and shear than mortared equivalents. They perform acceptably in low-rise, single-story applications and in non-load-bearing screens or fences, but are unsuitable for tall structures or high seismic zones where mortar-bonded construction is required by code. Water penetration is the primary durability concern; capillary rise and freeze-thaw cycling can destabilize units over time if the wall is exposed to weather without protective coating or backing.

Dry construction sees use in landscaping retaining walls (often reinforced internally with geogrid), decorative veneer panels, and temporary site barriers. Some precast concrete producers make dry-stack units with shaped edges to reduce visible gaps. The method appeals where speed matters, rework is frequent, or reversibility is desirable, since units can be removed and reused without breaking mortar bonds.

Terminology reflects the literal absence of moisture-based binder. In contrast, wet construction relies on mortar or grout to fill joints and distribute loads. Building codes distinguish dry masonry by its lower allowable bearing pressures and often require it to be backed or reinforced when used in structural applications.
