shutterer: the tradesperson who builds concrete's temporary skeleton
A shutterer is a skilled tradesperson who designs, fabricates, and erects the temporary wooden or metal framework, called shuttering or formwork, that holds concrete in place while it sets and hardens. This framework is the mold into which wet concrete is poured; without it, the concrete would simply flow away. Once the concrete has cured sufficiently, usually after 7 to 14 days depending on mix design and ambient conditions, the shutterer removes the formwork to expose the finished concrete surface.
Shuttering takes many forms depending on the structural element being cast. For simple flat slabs, the shutterer might use plywood sheets supported on adjustable metal props and wooden joists. For walls, columns, and complex geometric shapes, custom-built timber or steel frameworks are required. Large-scale commercial projects often use proprietary systems with interlocking aluminum or steel panels that can be rapidly assembled, reused many times, and stripped cleanly. The shutterer must calculate loadings precisely: a cubic meter of concrete weighs approximately 2,400 kilograms, and the formwork must safely support this dead load plus the hydrostatic pressure exerted by wet concrete against vertical surfaces.
The quality of the finished concrete surface depends heavily on the shutterer's work. Minor defects in formwork, such as loose joints or warped timber, translate directly into visible blemishes on the concrete. Surface finish, dimensional accuracy to within millimeters, and the prevention of concrete blow-holes all require meticulous attention to formwork installation. Experienced shutterers understand how concrete behaves as it cures, anticipate where settlement or cracking might occur in the formwork itself, and adjust their designs accordingly.
Common Challenges and Variants
Striking times are critical: remove shuttering too early and the concrete may not be strong enough; leave it too long and efficiency drops. On exposed concrete finishes, the shutterer may line the formwork with special boarding, plastic sheeting, or rubber to achieve a specific aesthetic. On large infrastructure projects such as bridge decks or tunnel linings, the shutterer works within tight tolerances and may use hydraulic striking systems or traveling formwork that is progressively moved along the structure. Repair and maintenance of formwork between uses is constant: timber swells when wet, metal can rust, and fasteners loosen.
The term 'shutterer' is primarily British Commonwealth usage; in North America and some other regions, the equivalent role is often called a formwork carpenter or formwork technician. The term 'shutter' itself derives from the notion of the formwork as a temporary closure or container. The role requires competence in carpentry, structural understanding, and often proficiency with hydraulic and mechanical equipment. On modern projects, the shutterer works closely with concrete specialists, engineers, and site supervisors to ensure schedules are met and safety standards are upheld.
