A ductor is an oscillating roller mounted in the ink system of an offset or letterpress printing machine. Its job is to portion out ink from a stationary fountain roller to the rotating distribution rollers, controlling both the amount and frequency of ink transfer. On a typical press, the ductor rocks back and forth in a mechanical cycle, dipping into the fountain on one stroke and wiping across the first distributor roller on the return, then lifting clear again. This intermittent contact prevents flooding the rollers with excess ink while maintaining consistent ink film thickness across the plate.
The ductor operates on a camshaft-driven mechanism that coordinates its oscillation with the main press cycle. In older presses, the timing and stroke length were set by adjusting the position of an eccentric cam or the ductor rod itself. Modern presses allow adjustment of both the ductor stroke (how far it travels) and its frequency (how many times per press revolution it contacts the fountain). The ductor typically has a rubber or synthetic covering, similar to other press rollers, and must maintain close dimensional tolerances to function effectively.
Ink control and press stability
The ductor is critical because offset and letterpress inking systems demand precise ink film thickness, usually measured in microns. Too much ink transfer produces heavy, muddy prints and causes ink to accumulate on non-image areas; too little causes weak colour and coverage problems. The ductor's oscillating action creates a metering effect: on each stroke it deposits a small, controlled amount of ink onto the distribution rollers, which then blend and carry it forward through the rest of the ink train. Adjusting ductor stroke length is one of the primary ways press operators control ink flow during a run.
Problems with the ductor range from mechanical to chemical. A ductor may skip or stick if the linkage wears or the camshaft becomes misaligned, producing uneven ink transfer. The ductor roller covering can glaze (harden and lose grip) from prolonged contact with certain ink types or from inadequate cleaning between jobs, reducing its ability to pick up ink cleanly. Ink buildup on the non-contact surfaces of the ductor can harden and flake onto the printed sheet. Regular cleaning with appropriate solvents and checking of mechanical play are essential maintenance tasks.
The term ductor, derived from the Latin ducere (to lead or conduct), reflects its role as the guide that conducts ink in measured portions into the printing system. While the ductor itself is a simple component, its proper function is inseparable from the stability of colour register and print quality on the press.
