paper jam: when sheets bind up in the feed path
A paper jam occurs when one or more sheets of paper become wedged, creased, or pinched inside the mechanical path of a copier, printer, or related device, stopping the machine from functioning until cleared. The jammed paper typically blocks the feed rollers, registration rollers, or exit path, triggering a sensor that halts the entire operation. Jams range from a single sheet caught at an awkward angle to multiple sheets crumpled together, each requiring different clearing procedures.
Jams form through several mechanisms. Sheets may curl due to humidity and fail to separate cleanly from the stack; roller friction can cause a single sheet to drag a second sheet into the path; torn fragments left from a previous jam can initiate a new one; and foreign objects like staples, tape, or clip debris wedged in the paper tray will snag passing sheets. High-speed machines operating above 80 copies per minute are more vulnerable because the forces involved make misfeeds harder to prevent and faster to bind.
Prevention and diagnosis
Preventive measures include using paper stored at 45 to 55 percent relative humidity, fanning the paper stack before loading, and ensuring the feed mechanism is clean and rollers are not glazed or worn. Regular maintenance of pickup rollers, separation pads, and registration assemblies reduces jam frequency significantly. Most modern devices include multiple sensors that identify not just whether a jam has occurred but roughly where in the paper path it happened, displayed as a floor plan on the control panel.
The jam itself causes secondary damage. Pulled or crumpled paper leaves fibers and dust in the mechanism; a forcefully extracted sheet may tear, leaving fragments behind; and stress on feed gears or clutches during a jam can eventually wear them out. Repeated jams often indicate underlying problems: worn pickup rollers that slip on the paper, humidity levels outside specification, or paper quality below the manufacturer's recommendations for weight or finish.
In offset and digital printing environments, jams are classified by cost impact. A jam in the paper feeder or input tray costs only the spoiled sheet and brief restart time. A jam deep in the imaging engine or exit path can require partial disassembly, lost production hours, and risk of damage to internal optics or toner systems. Professional print rooms maintain jam-clearing supplies including nonabrasive tools, flashlights, and detailed error code documentation to minimize downtime.
