A dust jacket is a paper wrapper glued or folded around a hardback book's binding. Its primary mechanical function is to shield the cloth or leather cover beneath from dust, moisture, and handling wear during storage and transport. The jacket typically extends from the spine, wraps around both front and back covers, and folds inward at the top and bottom edges to grip the book block firmly without adhesive contact with the binding itself.

The jacket serves as the book's primary sales surface. The front cover displays the title, author, and cover art; the back cover carries review quotations, author biography, or marketing copy; the front flap unfolds to continue promotional text and often includes the book's price printed on the lower right corner; the back flap traditionally carries the publisher's logo or additional design. Spine design must account for the thickness of both the paper stock and the underlying binding, as poorly calculated spines result in unsightly gaps or bunching when the book closes.

Stock and Construction

Dust jackets are printed on coated paper stock, typically 80 to 100 gsm, chosen for its brightness and color fidelity. The paper is cut to size, printed via offset lithography or digital methods, then creased along fold lines using brass rules in a platen or rotary creaser. Quality control focuses on crease sharpness: weak creases cause wrinkles and poor fit; over-creased paper becomes brittle and splits at corners. The jacket is wrapped around the book either by hand or by semi-automatic equipment that meters and folds the flaps to grip the boards without gaps.

The chief manufacturing challenge is accounting for binding variation. Board thickness tolerances, cloth cover texture, and edge finish all affect how tightly the jacket wraps. Jackets printed too narrow slide off; those too wide bunch and crease visibly. Most printers specify binding measurements to within 1 mm and build in 3 to 5 mm of cumulative tolerance across the front board, spine, and back board. Changes in humidity and temperature during storage can also cause the jacket to shift slightly on the book, introducing visible misregistration of the spine design.

Dust jackets have declined in some markets as trade paperback binding has become standard, yet remain essential for high-end and hardcover publications. They are a cost item manufacturers seek to minimize, yet their absence signals lower production quality to buyers. The term originates from the jacket's literal original purpose: keeping dust off books during shipment and shelving, before central heating and controlled warehousing made this protection less critical functionally. Today the dust jacket is valued chiefly as a brand carrier and protective surface that can be discarded without damaging the book beneath.
