DWV: the pipes that carry away what toilets, sinks and showers reject
DWV stands for drain-waste-vent, the system of pipes in a building that removes wastewater and sewage to the municipal sewer or septic tank, and vents sewer gases safely to the roof. It is distinct from the supply lines that bring fresh water in. A typical residence has perhaps 50 to 100 feet of DWV piping, much of it hidden behind walls and under floors.
DWV pipes are larger diameter than supply lines, typically 1.5 to 4 inches, because they must move both liquid and solid waste at relatively low velocity without clogging. They slope downward at a gentle grade, usually one-eighth inch per foot, so that water flows by gravity alone without pooling. Most DWV systems are made from PVC, ABS, or cast iron, all of which resist corrosion from sewage and the hydrogen sulfide gases that form in drains.

Drain lines carry wastewater from fixtures like showers and washbasins. Waste lines carry sewage from toilets and are larger to handle solids. Vent lines, or stacks, run vertically through the building and exit the roof; they allow air into the system so drains flow freely, and they allow sewer gases to escape rather than pressurizing the pipes or creating a vacuum that would slow drainage.Trouble in a DWV system is usually a clog or a blocked vent. A sluggish sink, backed-up toilet, or foul odor often points to waste or grease accumulation in a drain. If multiple fixtures drain slowly at once, the problem is usually downstream, near the main line or where it exits the building. A vent blocked by ice, nests, or debris will cause water to drain slowly from all fixtures on that branch.
DWV plumbing codes are strict and vary by jurisdiction. They specify pipe diameter for each fixture, slope requirements, the spacing and sizing of vent stacks, trap seals (the water barriers that prevent sewer gas from entering the building), and clearances from potable water lines. These rules exist to prevent cross-contamination and backflow. An inspector will check DWV work before walls are closed.
