dyeline: fast, ammonia-driven blueprint for technical drawings
A dyeline is a contact-print reproduction system that uses diazo compounds, light-sensitive organic chemicals that decompose under ultraviolet radiation. The process produces paper copies of original drawings, typically engineering and architectural blueprints, without the wet chemistry or long exposure times of older blueprint methods. A dyeline machine exposes the original drawing and a special coated paper simultaneously to UV light, then runs the exposed paper through an ammonia vapor chamber to develop the image. The result appears in minutes.
The diazo coating on the paper contains a colorless diazo salt and a coupler chemical. UV light breaks down the diazo compound wherever light passes through the original drawing. In the ammonia chamber, any diazo salt that survives exposure reacts with the coupler to form a colored azo dye, typically black, blue, or sepia. The unexposed areas (where the original had opaque lines) retain the diazo and produce the dark image; cleared areas remain white. This is the inverse logic of a blueprint and requires no water, making the process faster and neater than ferro-prussiate methods.
Dyeline papers and films come in various weights and finishes. Semi-transparent vellum originals work best because they allow even UV penetration. Mylar or polyester film originals produce sharper copies. The ammonia vapor is caustic and the fumes are irritating; machines are typically ventilated to the outside. Exposure time ranges from 30 seconds to several minutes depending on the darkness of the original and the desired print density.
The process dominated technical reproduction from the 1950s through the 1980s in architectural and engineering offices. A single operator could produce dozens of copies of a large drawing in an hour. Dyeline machines were compact and needed only standard electrical supply and an ammonia cartridge or ammonia tank. The term "dyeline" became genericized to describe any contact-print reproduction, though it strictly refers only to the diazo process.
Digital scanning and wide-format inkjet printing have largely displaced dyeline systems. However, dyeline machines remain in use where large-format reproduction of existing originals is needed and cost per copy matters more than speed. The chemistry is stable and the machines are simple enough that older units still operate reliably. A dyeline copy from a good original is stable, dimensionally accurate, and resistant to fading when stored in normal conditions.
