An earlet is an underdeveloped or stunted grain-bearing head on a cereal stem, smaller and less fertile than a normal ear. It forms on the same plant alongside full-sized ears and contains fewer kernels, if any mature to harvest weight. In wheat, barley, oats, and rye, earlets appear as secondary shoots that fail to achieve the size or seed-set of the primary ear, making them economically worthless at threshing.
Earlets occur through several pathways. Poor pollination during the critical flowering window leaves florets unfertilized. Shading from leaf or stem disease, particularly fungal infections like powdery mildew or septoria, starves developing ears of light. Lodging (stem collapse) after heavy rain or wind diverts carbohydrates away from younger shoots. Nutrient deficiency, especially nitrogen stress during stem elongation, produces ears with shorter rachis segments and fewer spikelets. Variety genetics also matter: some cultivars naturally branch more prolifically, generating more secondary heads of variable size.
Impact on yield and processing
Earlets reduce harvestable grain mass without adding significant straw. Because they contain lighter, shriveled, or empty seeds, they pass through combine sieves or are separated at the grain cleaner, contributing to dockage. In malting barley, earlets are grounds for rejection since uniformity of kernel size and modification affects fermentation. For wheat destined for milling, their presence signals either variety susceptibility or field stress that may have compromised the main crop's protein content or falling number.The term "earlet" reflects the diminutive suffix common in botanical English, similar to leaflet or rootlet. It denotes a structure that is morphologically recognizable but functionally incomplete. Agronomists monitor earlet frequency in breeding trials and field assessments as an early warning of environmental or genetic stress; a high proportion suggests problems during the anthesis-to-milk stage that may affect average kernel weight across the whole stand.
