A manufacturing defect in which the edges of sheet metal form a wave pattern during deep drawing.

Earing is a defect that appears on the rim of a deep-drawn cup or container when the metal edges curl upward in a wave pattern, typically four or eight lobes around the circumference. It occurs during the stamping process when the sheet metal flows unevenly toward the die cavity, causing some sections of the blank's perimeter to stretch more than others. The result is an irregular, scalloped top that must be trimmed away, wasting material and adding cost to finishing.

The root cause lies in anisotropy, the directional variation in mechanical properties that exists in most rolled sheet metal. During rolling, the grain structure aligns preferentially in the rolling direction, creating zones of different strength and ductility around the blank. As the press forces metal inward and downward, these weak and strong regions stretch at different rates. Material oriented at 0 and 90 degrees to the rolling direction often flows most readily, while material at 45 degrees resists flow, creating the characteristic four-lobed or eight-lobed pattern.

Controlling and Reducing Earing

Process variables significantly affect earing severity. Blank size, holder pressure, die radius, draw speed, and punch geometry all influence how evenly metal flows into the cavity. Lubricant selection and temperature also matter; thicker oils and warmer blanks can reduce friction and improve flow uniformity. Experienced shops vary holder pressure in stages, holding tighter on the strong axes and lighter on the weak ones, to force more even strain distribution.

Material choice offers another lever. Aluminum alloys typically show less earing than steel because their crystallographic texture is less pronounced. Within steels, draw-quality grades are specifically processed to minimize texture; interstitial-free and ultra-low-carbon steels perform better than higher-carbon variants. Some suppliers anneal and recrystallize sheet to randomize grain orientation, directly reducing the problem. Earing increases with drawing ratio (the ratio of cup diameter to punch diameter), so shallow draws are inherently cleaner.

The term itself simply reflects what the defect looks like, though the visual metaphor comes from the way irregular protrusions resemble ears sprouting from the rim. Trimming the ears off adds labor and scrap; in high-volume production, even small reductions in earing translate to significant material and time savings. For this reason, controlling earing is a standard goal in die design and process development for any deep-drawing operation.
