ECTS: the thermometer that tells your engine when it's running hot
An engine coolant temperature sensor measures the heat of the liquid circulating through your engine block and reports that temperature to the engine control unit. The ECU uses this signal to adjust fuel injection, ignition timing, and fan operation. Without accurate coolant temperature data, the engine cannot run efficiently or safely.
The sensor itself is a thermistor, usually a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) type, housed in a brass or steel probe that screws directly into the coolant jacket. As coolant temperature rises, the thermistor's electrical resistance drops; as it cools, resistance increases. The ECU converts this resistance change into a temperature reading. Most automotive ECTS units operate across a range of about 40 degrees Celsius to 130 degrees Celsius.
Engines typically carry more than one coolant temperature sensor. The main ECTS feeds the ECU for fuel and spark control. A second sensor may monitor coolant temperature for the dashboard gauge, and a third might trigger the cooling fan or alert the driver to overheat conditions. Each sensor connects independently to its own circuit.
Failure modes and diagnostics
An ECTS failure is often revealed through diagnostic trouble codes, most commonly a short or open circuit code. A stuck-open sensor reads as a false cold condition, causing the ECU to run an overly rich fuel mixture and prevent the cooling fan from engaging. A stuck-short sensor reads as excessively hot, leading to lean running and unnecessary fan activation. Physical failures include corroded connectors, thermistor degradation from thermal cycling, and water intrusion into the probe.
Replacement requires engine coolant to be drained or the system depressurized, depending on sensor location and design. Labor difficulty varies with engine bay layout; some sensors are readily accessible from above, while others sit deep in the engine block or behind manifolds. Sensor cost is modest, but diagnosis can be time-consuming if the fault is intermittent or if multiple temperature sensors are present on the vehicle.
