underactuate: deliberately restrict control to fewer degrees of freedom
To underactuate a mechanical system is to design or operate it with fewer independent actuators than it has degrees of freedom. A robot arm with seven joints but only three motors is underactuated; so is a bipedal walker that uses ankle and hip motors but lets the knee joint move passively. The system can still reach multiple configurations, but only some motions can be directly commanded, the rest follow from dynamics, gravity, or mechanical constraint.
Underactuation trades control authority for mechanical simplicity and energy efficiency. A fully actuated system demands a motor or solenoid for every joint, which adds mass, wiring, cost, and power draw. An underactuated design accepts that certain motions will be coupled or limited, but gains lighter construction and lower operating expense. In prosthetics and legged robots, passive compliance through underactuation reduces impact shock and allows some motions to happen naturally without active control.
Practical limits and failure modes
The danger of underactuation is loss of controllability in transient conditions or unexpected loads. A passive knee joint works well on level ground at steady gait speed; it may buckle or behave unpredictably on stairs or rough terrain. Similarly, an underactuated parallel gripper with fixed finger geometry can grasp only shapes within a narrow envelope. The system becomes unstable if external forces exceed what the passive elements can absorb.
Success depends on careful matching of task to design. Underactuated tendon-driven hands used in surgery or underwater robotics work because the environment is predictable and manipulation tasks are slow and deliberate. Underactuated systems in unpredictable environments, factory assembly lines, field robotics, usually require additional sensing and active feedback control to keep behavior within safe bounds, which can consume much of the weight and power savings the underactuation was meant to provide.
