El

Any one of several specific elevated railways.

El: rapid transit on stilts above the street

An El is an elevated railway system, typically urban rapid transit, where tracks run on steel or concrete structures well above street level. The term emerged in American English as shorthand for "elevated railway" and persists most strongly in Chicago, where the Chicago "L" remains the second-largest rapid transit system in the United States. The structure itself, rather than the operator or service, defines the El; it is fundamentally a response to space constraints in dense city centers, placing trains on viaducts to avoid grade-level congestion.

El systems vary considerably in their construction and capacity. Steel lattice towers support steel box-girder or plate-girder decks, typically 20 to 50 feet above street grade, though some sections climb higher to clear river traffic or buildings. Track gauge is usually standard (4 feet 8.5 inches in North America), and third-rail or overhead catenary supplies power to the trains. Chicago's El uses 600-volt direct current via third rail and operates both full-size heavy rail (A and B divisions) and lighter branch lines, some with single-track sections.

Maintenance and operational challenges

El infrastructure ages predictably. Steel corrodes, bearings wear, and concrete spalls and cracks under thermal cycling and vibration stress. Drainage remains perpetually problematic: water accumulates on deck surfaces, penetrates expansion joints, and accelerates deterioration of support members below. Track maintenance is complicated by the permanent right-of-way overhead; rail replacement, switch overhaul, and tie renewal must occur within strict windows and with careful coordination of electrical systems. Noise and vibration transfer through the structure to buildings immediately below, a persistent source of friction with adjacent property owners.

The El's engineering advantage is its permanence and immunity to street-level disruption. Once built, an El line does not compete for road space, does not intersect grade crossings with automobiles, and operates at frequency limited primarily by signal systems and maintenance rather than traffic flow. Its disadvantage is capital cost: elevated construction is substantially more expensive than grade-level rail, and retrofitting stations or extending lines in built-up areas requires property acquisition and structural engineering work that grade-level or subway alternatives may avoid.

The term El itself is now primarily a Chicago colloquialism, though elevated systems exist in other cities (Boston's Orange and Green Lines run partly elevated; New York's system includes elevated sections). Outside North America, elevated rapid transit is less commonly called an El; European systems typically use terms tied to their specific mode or operator. The word has become branded enough that other cities' elevated railways are rarely referred to as Els in professional or regulatory contexts.
