An elephant race happens when a truck attempting to overtake another truck does so at only a marginally higher speed, creating a rolling blockade that can persist for kilometers. The passing truck might be traveling at 90 km/h while the vehicle it is passing moves at 85 km/h, meaning the overtake takes many minutes to complete. During this time, passenger cars and faster traffic stack up behind both vehicles, unable to pass safely.

The term originates in European road culture, particularly in Germany and Scandinavia, where highway speed limiters on trucks are legally mandated or common practice. When two trucks with similar limiter settings approach each other, the marginal speed difference creates exactly this scenario. A truck governed to 89 km/h attempting to pass one set to 87 km/h will take roughly 10 to 15 minutes to fully clear, depending on vehicle length and the distance chosen for the maneuver.

Elephant races cause genuine traffic flow problems. They create hazardous situations where frustrated drivers in cars attempt risky passes, raise accident risk through congestion, and waste fuel for all vehicles trapped behind. On two-lane highways, they effectively convert the passing lane into a stationary obstruction. Some jurisdictions have responded by restricting truck passing windows to specific hours or by requiring trucks to maintain wider speed differentials for safe overtaking.

The phenomenon reflects the tension between safety regulation and operational efficiency in freight transport. Speed limiters reduce accidents and fuel consumption, but they can also eliminate the speed margins that allow efficient passing maneuvers. Modern highway design in heavy-traffic corridors increasingly relies on three-lane sections or dedicated truck lanes to prevent situations where slow overtaking becomes necessary.
