A hovercraft is a vessel or vehicle that rides on a cushion of pressurized air rather than wheels or hulls. Large fans or jet engines force air downward and outward through a flexible skirt that seals the perimeter, creating lift that suspends the craft above the surface. This separation from the ground or water reduces friction dramatically, allowing transit across terrain where conventional vehicles cannot operate: marshes, tidal flats, ice, sand, mud, and rough seas up to moderate wave heights.

The air-cushion principle supports payloads ranging from small reconnaissance craft under 5 tonnes to military landing craft exceeding 300 tonnes. Early designs used centrifugal fans driven by piston or turbine engines; modern hovercraft typically employ gas turbines or large piston engines to feed the lift system and provide directional thrust. Control is achieved by varying thrust distribution and angling jet efflux or rudders into the airflow. Fuel consumption is heavy because continuous fan power is required simply to stay aloft, making hovercraft economical only where their terrain-independence justifies the energy cost.

The skirt is the critical wear component. Early rigid or semi-rigid designs gave way to flexible bag and finger skirts made from neoprene-coated nylon or polyurethane. These skirts lose integrity quickly on sharp rocks and rough ground, and replacement is frequent. Maintenance is intensive: seals degrade, bearings and fans require constant attention, and noise levels are high enough to impose operational restrictions in populated areas.

Service roles and decline

Hovercraft saw operational use in military amphibious assault, civilian ferry services (notably cross-channel), and specialized logistics over difficult terrain. From the 1960s through 1980s they were regarded as the future of fast transport. However, reliability problems, high operating costs, extreme noise, salt-water corrosion, and the emergence of faster, more efficient fast ferries and aircraft sharply limited their deployment. Today they are rare in civilian service; military applications persist in niche roles where their load-carrying and rough-terrain capability remain unmatched by alternatives.

The name derives from the hovering motion visible to observers, though internally the term air-cushion vehicle (ACV) is standard. The technology depends entirely on continuous energy input to the lift system: if engines fail or fans are damaged, the craft sinks immediately to the surface. This inherent vulnerability, combined with the operational constraints of high fuel burn and maintenance demand, has confined hovercraft to specialized missions rather than broad transportation roles.
