ELFEXT: crosstalk measured at the far end of a cable pair
Equal-level far-end crosstalk, or ELFEXT, is a measure of how much signal energy from one pair of wires in a cable bundle leaks into an adjacent pair at the receiving end, relative to the strength of the signal actually arriving at that end. It quantifies unwanted coupling between pairs over distance, expressed in decibels. ELFEXT is a critical parameter in copper twisted-pair cabling standards, where multiple pairs run in parallel inside the same jacket and must remain electrically isolated from one another.
The term "far-end" distinguishes ELFEXT from NEXT (near-end crosstalk), which measures coupling at the transmitting end. A signal sent on one pair from point A to point B will induce noise on neighboring pairs. If that noise is measured at point B, the far end, it is ELFEXT. If measured at point A, near the source, it is NEXT. ELFEXT typically appears smaller than NEXT because the interfering signal attenuates over distance, but it remains a real source of signal degradation in long cable runs.
ELFEXT performance depends on pair twist rates, shielding, and cable construction. Category 5e, 6, and 6A cables have specified ELFEXT limits at various frequencies, ranging from 1 MHz to 250 MHz for Cat 6A. Poor ELFEXT indicates that the cable does not maintain adequate pair separation or balance. Measurements are made using specialized test equipment that injects a signal on one pair and measures the coupled energy on an adjacent pair at the opposite end, then normalizes the result by the received signal power on the reference pair.
Why ELFEXT matters in high-speed applications
In gigabit Ethernet and other high-frequency applications, ELFEXT becomes more significant because signal margins are tighter. A Cat 6 cable might pass NEXT but fail ELFEXT at 250 MHz if jacket materials or twist uniformity degrade. Cable manufacturers must control conductor geometry, insulation thickness, and twisting precision to ensure ELFEXT remains within standard limits. Field testing of installed cabling often reveals ELFEXT violations at the far end of long runs where other parameters appear acceptable.
ELFEXT is also called "equal-level" because the measurement normalizes crosstalk against the actual received signal level, not an artificial reference. This makes it a true measure of signal-to-noise ratio at the far end rather than an absolute leakage figure. It is one of several transmission parameters, alongside insertion loss, return loss, and NEXT, that must be verified during cabling certification and troubleshooting.
