ringback: the signal that tells you someone's phone is ringing
A ringback is an audible tone sent back through the telephone line to the caller's handset to indicate that the called party's telephone is actively ringing. It exists purely to reassure the caller that their call has connected and is being signaled at the destination, rather than sitting in a dead line or queue. Without ringback, a caller would hear only silence and have no way to know whether their call reached the network at all.
The ringback tone itself varies by region and telephone system. In North America, it is typically a 440 Hz sine wave modulated with a 20 Hz amplitude variation, creating a distinctive burring sound repeated at intervals. European systems often use a different cadence and frequency. The tone is generated by the telephone exchange or switching equipment at the called end and is sent back to the caller's exchange, which then routes it to the caller's handset.
Ringback is distinct from the actual ringing that occurs at the called party's telephone. The called party hears a local ringing tone generated by their own telephone instrument or exchange; the caller hears the ringback tone generated upstream and returned. These two signals are usually different frequencies and cadences to avoid confusion, though both indicate the same event: an active attempt to reach the destination number.
When ringback fails
Ringback problems often signal deeper issues in the call path. If a caller hears no ringback and the call does connect, the switching equipment may have failed to generate or return the tone. If ringback continues indefinitely but no one answers, the called party's telephone may be malfunctioning or the line may be held in a ringing state artificially. VoIP systems and modern PBXs can fake ringback entirely, playing it locally to the caller while no actual ringing occurs at the destination, a practice used to cover call delays or routing complexity.In older circuit-switched telephone networks, ringback was essential feedback because call setup was invisible to the user. Modern IP-based telephony systems retain ringback for compatibility and user expectation, but some services allow customization of the tone or eliminate it in favor of other notifications. The term originated in the early telephone exchanges when operators had to manually connect calls; the ringback indicated to the caller that the operator had successfully signaled the destination.
